Prince Charles calls for 'environmental renaissance'

The world needs to see an 'environmental renaissance' and a new way of thinking to stop irreversible climate change, Britain's Prince Charles told the Chamber of Deputies Monday.

Charles, who arrived Sunday for a three-day visit to Italy, told Italian MPs that the renaissance would be the result of ''putting together scientific knowledge, innovation and imagination''.

The world needs to ''create a new vision, a new system of values '' if it seriously wants to deal with global warming, he said.

Speaking in Italian and quoting Julius Caesar's famous phrase - ''the die is cast'' - as he crossed the Rubicon, Charles said time was quickly running out.

Echoing warning from global warming experts, Charles said there were only 99 months left to stop irreversible climate change, urging Italy and Britain to work together.

''After that, it will be too late,'' said Charles, concluding his address by warning that if we do not save the environment ''our grandchildren will never forgive us''.
