The House of Augustus on Rome's Palatine Hill will be among historic stop-offs for Britain's Prince Charles and his wife Camilla Duchess of Cornwall when they make a three-day state visit to Italy next week.

The royal couple are set to arrive in Rome on Sunday and will be received by Italian President Giorgio Napolitano and his wife Clio, according to the British Embassy.

On Monday the prince will speak to the Chamber of Deputies on climate change in view of the Group of Eight summit to be held on the Sardinian island of La Maddalena under Italian presidency in July.

He and Camilla will then be received by Pope Benedict XVI in the prince's first papal audience since his divorce from Diana, Princess of Wales, and subsequent remarriage.

The royal couple are also expected to meet the Vatican's Secretary of State, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, to discuss inter-religious understanding before attending a world hunger event at Villa Wolkonsky, the residence of the British Ambassador to Italy.

On Tuesday, April 28, the prince will meet with Italian businessmen from the association of industrial employers Confindustria to discuss environmental issues while Camilla pays a visit to the Keats-Shelley Museum at the Spanish Steps.

The couple will then leave for Venice, where they will visit the restored Fenice opera house.

Charles will then join a seminar on preserving the lagoon while Camilla visits the Peggy Guggenheim Collection.

In the evening the royals will attend a performance of Donizetti's Maria Stuarda at the Fenice.

The couple are due to travel to Germany later in the week.

Charles has made frequent private trips to Italy - especially Tuscany, where he has many friends - to pursue his interests in art and architecture.

He last made an official visit to the country seven years ago.

The tour, including Rome, Florence and Naples, was largely aimed at promoting British beef after the 'mad cow' scare.
