Ed.: The Inspired Stays series highlights hotels we love around Italy. Each property is independently reviewed by an Italy Magazine writer, who is generally hosted on a complimentary basis. Our contributors do not accept compensation or gifts in exchange for specific types of coverage. We only showcase properties we would genuinely recommend overall.

Why we love it

Sleek and modern, this new luxury hotel in Marriott’s portfolio has a minimalist-leaning design and a vibe that straddles the line between trendy rendezvous point and peaceful retreat.

What to expect

EDITION hotels are known for their clean-lined design and focus on dining and drinking, with restaurants and bars meant to attract locals as well as travelers. This property fits that mold to a tee. During dinner at Anima, my husband and I struck up a conversation with the Romans at the table next to ours, who were curious about this buzzy new hotel. Seated across from us was an editor of T, the New York Times’ style magazine. That pretty much sums up the kind of crowd you’re likely to find here.

Background

The hotel is housed in a 1940s rationalist building designed by Cesare Pascoletti and Marcello Piacentini that once served as offices for the Banca Nazionale del Lavoro. During the renovation, lauded architect Patricia Urquiola kept many of the historic details, including an original staircase.

Location, location, location

The hotel is conveniently located in the center of Rome a couple of blocks from Piazza Barberini and Via Veneto. Attractions like the Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps are within a 15-minute walk. It’s on a quiet side street with little traffic, so you get the best of both worlds.

Where you’ll sleep

The 91 rooms and suites have a minimalist, masculine style, with walnut wood-paneled walls, sleek fixtures, bespoke furniture, and stone bathrooms outfitted with products by Le Labo. There are Nespresso machines and mini-bars with Ruinart champagne and local snacks like SAID chocolate. My junior suite had a separate sitting area that could be closed off from the bedroom, with a comfortable sofa, retro coffee table, and flat-screen TV. Some rooms have street views; others look onto the courtyard.

Dining and drinks

Restaurant at Rome EDITION
Restaurant at The Rome EDITION

There are two restaurants with tables in the ground-floor garden — the casual Garden and signature restaurant Anima — plus an outpost of the Punch Room and the intimate Jade Bar, which focuses on agave-based spirits. The culinary direction was entrusted to Paola Colucci, chef of the beloved local restaurant Pianostrada, who brings a refined, contemporary approach to traditional Italian recipes and ingredients. The rooftop bar was not yet open during my stay, as the hotel was in soft opening mode.

Service notes

The staff are courteous and professional — no complaints here.

Spa time

There’s a gym and a couple of treatment rooms for massages, which were not yet ready during my stay.

Family perks

The hotel is family-friendly, but it seems more appropriate for teenagers and well-behaved tweens than young children.
