words by Carol King Ryanair has started three new flying routes to and from Sicily’s newest commercial airport, Comiso, in Ragusa, an area famous for its baroque architecture, beautiful countryside and sandy beaches. The Irish low-cost airline is offering flights from Comiso Airport to London’s Stansted Airport, Rome’s Ciampino Airport and Brussels’ Charleroi Airport. Fares start at €30.99. Ryanair is the first scheduled airline to operate services at Comiso Airport, with flights to Rome Ciampino operating six times weekly. Flights to London Stansted and Brussels Charleroi operate twice a week. Comiso Airport is in southeast Sicily in the area famed for being the location where the popular Italian TV series ‘Il commissario Montalbano’ (Inspector Montalbano) is filmed. Comiso Airport was reopened on 30 May 2013 for commercial and civil use after works to convert the site from a military base. Ryanair has signed a five-year contract with Comiso Airport. Other airlines flying to Comiso are Medavia, which is running seasonal flights to Malta, and Transavia, which is operating seasonal flights to Paris’ Orly Airport. The Ryanair routes are expected to deliver more than 150,000 passengers a year and sustain more than 150 on-site jobs at Comiso Airport. Ryanair operates 51 routes across Sicily’s four international airports: 37 at Trapani Airport (TPS), 12 at Palermo Falcone–Borsellino Airport (PMO), and one each at Catania Fontanarossa Airport (CTA) and Comiso Vincenzo Magliocco Airport (CIY).
