(ANSA) - Visitors to the Vatican patiently queued up around St. Peter's square on Tuesday as Italian police heightened security checks in the wake of the July bomb attacks in London.
The queue of pilgrims wound around the famous square as police with mobile metal detectors scanned everyone entering St Peter's basilica.
Officials said that Pope Benedict XVI will hold his weekly Wednesday general audience at the Vatican instead of at the summer residence of CastelGandolfo in view of the large number of pilgrims who have arrived.
