The British Embassy in Rome on Thursday denied Italian press reports that the British foreign ministry had dubbed Rome 'Stab City' in its advice to fans heading to Rome for next week's Champions League Final.
An embassy spokesman pointed out that the term had originated on British fan websites and that British authorities had full confidence in security arrangements for Wednesday's game between Manchester United and Barcelona.
In its advice to travelling fans, posted on its website, the Foreign Office told fans to avoid the subway and known trouble spots like Campo de' Fiori.
There was nothing in the advice to support the conjecture that the FO considered Rome 'Stab City', the spokesman said.
''The Foreign Office does not consider, and never has considered, Rome to be 'Stab City','' he said.
