If you’re looking for total relaxation, and perhaps you also need to cure a few ailments, the Terme Segestane, also known as “acque calde”, literally hot waters, may be the perfect destination for you.
These sulphur pools of hot springs can be found a 40 minute-drive from Palermo on the outskirts of the quaint fishing village of Castellammare del Golfo. They are set in a tranquil valley flanked by mountains, so you can soak up the views while the water de-stresses your body. And although the temperature is initially shocking - 44°C - once submerged, it is sheer bliss!
At the Terme Segestane, you will find two swimming pools (one is for children), and the so-called “Cave of the Queen”, a natural sauna. The facility offers a range of treatments including thermal baths, inhalation treatments, massages, aerosols, mud baths, whirlpool baths, and hot saunas.
The thermal waters are used to treat several diseases associated with the respiratory system, skin diseases, rheumatism, allergies, and even diseases related to the muscular and skeletal systems.
It is a spa experience to rival with the best hotels - but it will cost you absolutely nothing!
And as if this were not already worth your trip, Castellammare del Golfo offers several sightseeing options in the area. Castellammare itself features an Arab-Norman castle, which houses a museum complex. Not far away is the splendid Zingaro Nature Reserve overlooking the sea, a paradise for nature lovers. While you’re on your way to the reserve, make a stop in the picturesque village of Scopello and its old tonnara. If you like archeology, venture a bit farther and you will find the archaeological park of the ancient town of Segesta, where you can admire an unusually well-preserved Doric temple.
