Health officials on Friday said that three new cases of the H1N1 flu had been confirmed in Italy, brining the total to 59.
All three cases were said to have been men who had recently visited the United States.
Although the flu, also known as Influenza A or Swine flu, originated in Mexico, it has spread the most in the US, where the latest data from the World Health Organization (WHO) said there were 13,217 confirmed cases and 27 fatalities.
The WHO report, issued before Italy had confirmed its last three cases, said there were now 29,669 cases in 74 countries while the death toll had risen to 145.
Mexico has had the greatest number of fatalities, 108 out of 6,241 cases. Canada has had 2,978 cases and four deaths while Chile has had two and Costa Rica, Guatemala, Colombia and the Dominican Republic have each had a fatality.
In Europe, Britain has recorded the highest number of cases (822), followed by Spain (488), Germany (95) and France (73).
On Thursday, WHO upgraded the the flu to its highest level, 6, and said it was now classified as a pandemic, although its severity level was moderate.
