A 13-year-old Afghan girl killed by Italian soldiers who fired at a car that ignored a checkpoint stop order died in a ''tragic accident,'' Foreign Minister Franco Frattini told a Rome daily Monday.
The incident at Herat in western Afghanistan would be ''thoroughly'' investigated by military and civilian authorities, Frattini told Il Messaggero.
Afghan police and Rome military prosecutors will probe the incident.
