Through the 5th of August, the 2012 Torino Young City combines 47 previously separate festivals, camps, and workshops into a summer promoting the issues and activities that interest today's youth.
Nicknamed "ToYou", the festival focuses on four main themes--life, creativity, training, and sport--as it loops in the main events of the city's other summer festivals, including the the city slideshow projected on the Civic Palace and master DJ set that concludes the Festival of Music.
The first such festival in Turin, and perhaps the first of its kind on this scale, Torino Youth City extends the recognition brought by the city's designation as European Young Capital in 2010 to create a yearly program each June and July that "examines the trends and explores the interests and issues that affect new generations", according to Mayor Piero Fassino.
Pic Turin, a wall mural festival, allows young graffitti artists to freely express themselves in a supported environment, while Youth City Sport and Torino Street Style encourage alternative sports such as trail running, bike polo, street golf, BMX biking, urban climbing, and skateboardking. Aperito examines the Turin tradition of the aperitivo, created in the city, through guided tastings and bartender trick sessions.
The more than 100 concerts of Europa Cantat 2012, the 18th edition of Europe's leading choral festival, will also form part of Torino Young City, marking the first time the event has been held in Italy.
