Matteo Renzi, the mayor of Florence, took to the internet to announce via e-newsletter that the world famous Uffizi Gallery will soon unveil recent renovations and debut reserved artwork.

On the 17th December 2011, the Uffizi will inaugurate the first eight rooms of the first floor in the Vasari building. The halls make up the Nuovo Uffizi, covering 480 square meters of restored space.

The eight newly renovated rooms will house over 2500 paintings which were previously stored away from public viewing. The newly opened section of the museum will be entirely dedicated to sixteenth century foreign painters.

Opening one year behind schedule, the first taste of the new Uffizi will make a bold impact. Most notable are the ultramarine blue walls that have been chosen to contrast the traditional terracotta floors.

It has not yet been announced which works of art will be freed from their current secretive reserve.
