Legendary American photographer Steve McCurry is the author of a photographic project to launch Umbria internationally as a tourist destination commissioned to him by the Region of Umbria. McCurry, perhaps better known for the famous "Afghan Girl" picture published on the June 1985 cover of National Geographic, titled his 100-photo essay "Sensational Umbria."
"I think I could be happy living in Umbria," McCurry said. "It is in a strategic position to explore and enjoy all the magnificent beauty of Italy. I will be back for sure."
McCurry has personally selected the 15 images that will be shown in New York in November, at a gallery exhibit at the Italian Trade Commission and at Eataly New York.
"The passion people have for the region of Umbria was captured perfectly by McCurry’s remarkable storytelling power. It was a great match," said Catiuscia Marini, president of the Region of Umbria.
McCurry is recognized as one of the most iconic voices in contemporary photography and has won some of the most prestigious awards of the industry.
