Versace show kicked off the fashion week in Paris, after eight years of absence on the couture high wire, although the atelier remained open to private clients throughout these years.
Returning to the spotlight now might seem a risky action but "the world needs glamour" asserted Versace "and I missed couture" .
Glitter dominated the collection, with models wearing golden studs and bodices encrusted with crystals. Sequins were the life motif on luxurious strapless column dresses.
The shining gold details on dresses gave at the new collection a military allure - Versace called them "glamorous warriors" - contrasting with the more feminine off-the-shoulder corset-inspired pieces which were a main feature.
Versace's couture new start was marked with bursts of colour in yellow, green and red.
The smash hit collaboration between Versace and H&M last winter - with a new affordable clothing line aimed at a wider audience – reaffirmed that Versace is still a relevant name to the public. This success "made me realise I had to come back to Paris to show that Versace is a couture house" said Donatella Versace on the backstage.
At the show there was enough celebrity sparkle with actresses Cameron Diaz, Diane Kruger and Chloe Sevigny joining American Vogue editor Ana Wintour in the front row.
