Watching Plautus in Plautus's home

Sarsina is a little town that lies in the hills of Cesena, among Romagna, Marche and Toscana. The city offers some interesting sights of the Appennini, some little churches, a big and nice archaeological museum and little more.

But, searching old school memories, the name of Sarsina isn’t new! Sarsina... Why does this name lie deep in my mind? Because Sarsina is the hometown of Latin playwright Plauto. Yes, that Plauto, the writer of Anfitrione, Bacchides, Miles gloriosus, Pseudolus, Menaechmi (these only are the most played).

We know little about the story of Plautus, born in Sarsina in 259/251 B.C. and died in Rome in 184 B.C., but we know for sure that he was the father of the Latin comedy, and the consequence Italian comedy (such as Boccaccio and so on).

Every summer, Sarsina celebrates its most-famous citizen with the Plautus Festival. From the 15th of July to the 15th of August, a cycle of classical plays is organized in the open-air Arena Plautina, which was built in the nineties, few kilometres out of the town. Here, in the middle of the country, to watch a Latin comedy is a very charming experience. Many Italian companies and the most-famous actors take part in these representation which draw, every year, a great number of people.

In this edition, besides Plautus’ plays, plays from Aeschylus, Goldoni, Shakespeare and the others will also feature.
