ITALY Magazine begins a new series today, Word of the Week, where we examine one particular word from the Italian language each week.
Today we present ARRIVEDERCI (goodbye in English), which literally means "until we see each other again". Even though most people may already know this word, we picked it because October 2013 is Italian Heritage Month in the U.S., and we would like to remember all the Italians who left their homeland in search of better fortune abroad with the last word they most likely said before leaving: arrivederci.
In an another use of the word "arrivederci", Italian singer Caterina Caselli says goodbye to her lover, arrivederci amore ciao, in this popular song from 1968 titled Insieme a te non ci sto più ("I don't want to be with you anymore"), which has since become a classic of Italian pop music.
