The world’s best lasagna, according to the Internet

With more than 12 million page views in the last five years alone, close to 9,000 mostly five-star reviews, 16,000 Facebook likes and 33,000 Pinterest shares, “World’s Best Lasagna” is the most popular recipe on the web.

But if you think the recipe belongs to an Italian, think again: the author is John Chandler, a home cook from Dallas, Texas.

Chandler posted his lasagna recipe on AllRecipes.com, the largest English-language food website in the world, in 2001 when his girlfriend at the time encouraged him to share it online. But he didn’t want to simply call it “John’s Lasagna” and so he went for “World’s Best Lasagna”.

"I did it as a tongue-in-cheek joke, I had no idea this would happen," Chandler said on Good Morning America.

The recipe has been number one since he posted it.

"It's a very simple, easy recipe that everyone can appreciate. Everyone in their pantry has the things to make this. You don't need special equipment or a master’s in cooking,” Chandler said. "People have made it their own. They've changed it and added red wine or rosemary. It's not just my lasagna; everyone has shared in it."

Is there a secret to his lasagna’s success? “There’s no secret ingredient. It’s not kitchen magic. It’s a wholesome, homemade lasagna. I just think it’s a simple, comfort food,” Chandler said.

In the meantime, John's “World’s Best Pasta Sauce” is already up on the site.
