Not a church, but the world’s smallest theater was the original location for the recent wedding of a Tuscan couple. Andrea Ciappi and Teodora Anistoroaei, both 30 and living in Florence, have chosen the Teatrino di Vetriano, in the village of Vetriano di Pescaglia (Lucca) as the place where to exchange their vows, right on the stage of the tiny theater, looking toward their families and friends rather than with their backs to them. The Teatrino di Vetriano was added to the Guinness World Records list in 1997 as the smallest public historic theater in the world. It is only 71 square meters, but has everything a regular theater would have. It was built in 1890 by local villagers who decided to transform what used to be a barn in a gathering place for the community for the representation of plays. The theater has a trapezoidal plant with two lateral balconies and 75 seats. It was shut down in 1980 due to threatening instability. In 1997, the theater was acquired by the Fondazione FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano) that worked to restore it so it could be opened again. It now hosts cultural and artistic events in collaboration with La Scala theatre. Since September 2012, it is also offered as a wedding location. The first to use it in this sense were the couple from Florence. Teatrino di Vetriano is open the first and third Sunday of the month.
