What influence does the cinema have on today’s lovers? This is the question that the Osservatorio sull’Amore , on the dating and chat site Meetic.it, set out to answer when it interviewed 800 people aged 18 – 60.
When it comes to a hunk, readers will be glad to know, it seems you can’t beat the “made in Italy” variety and the man most Italian women would like as a fiancé is Baaria star Raul Bova, who has achieved the amazing feat of knocking George Clooney into second place. Montalbano fans will be relieved to learn that “sleuthing woman’s crumpet” Luca Zingaretti is only just below Brad Pitt in the placings, which are:
Raul Bova – 16.4% of the vote
George Clooney – 16.3%
Johnny Depp – 12.3%
Gabriel Garko – 11.9%
Brad Pitt – 10.3%
Luca Zingaretti – 10%
Giancarlo Giannini – 7.9%
Will Smith – 4.5%
Ewan McGregor – 3.1%
Richard Gere – 2.7%
The homemade model won again when Italian men were asked to name their ideal fiancée from a list of film stars and Italian stars outshine even Angelina Jolie in the placings:

Julia Roberts – 12%
Charlize Theron – 10.8%
Sabrina Ferilli – 10.6%
Giovanna Mezzogiorno – 9.4%

The cinema is alive and well in Italy and has not lost its link with romance, for 43.4% of couples interviewed said that the genre had played an important role in their own love stories and this figure rose to 59.7% among older couples. 54% of the couples interviewed would rather go to the cinema than watch a DVD at home.
When asked to name the best film for a couple in love to see, the winner was “Ghost” , closely followed by “Titanic”, with “Pretty Woman” taking third place. The top Italian film, coming in at number 11, is “L’Ultimo bacio”. “The Bridges of Madison County” is in sixth place, “When Harry Met Sally” is seventh and that golden oldie, “Gone with the Wind” is in ninth place.
We selected trailers and scenes from the Italian films cited above - including an interview to Raul Bova in the final video:
