10444 Gatwick Airport up for Sale

Have taken this from today's Telegraph;
BAA is putting Gatwick Airport up for sale a month after the Competition Commission authorities recommended that the operator sell one of its London airports.

The Commission's report said this would introduce more competition into the market and lead to lower landing fees for airlines and reduced prices for passengers.

Gatwick, which is Britain's second largest airport and handles about 35m passengers each year, may fetch about £3bn - with the sale breaking Spanish-owned BAA's stranglehold on the capital's airports.

BAA, which has been heavily criticised for the customer service at Heathrow and Gatwick, said today: "When the Competition Commission published its provisional findings, we said that we would be realistic in our response, though we disgaree with the Commission's report and the analysis on which it is founded."

Gatwick is likely to attract several bidders and Sir Richard Branson, the Virgin tycoon, has been linked with a bid for the airport in recent weeks.
