Last week, RAI, the Italian State broadcaster, showed the first episode of a prequel of its popular series Montalbano called Il giovane Montalbano (Young Montalbano).
Andrea Camilleri’s detective novels, featuring Inspector Montalbano, have long been international best-sellers and the related TV series with actor Luca Zingaretti as Salvo Montalbano shot in stunning locations around the South-East of Sicily have conquered Italian viewers and reached even wider audience as the series has been broadcast also abroad.
The new episodes of the drama focus on the adventures of a young inspector Montalbano, explaining how both his private life and career developed in his youth leading to the character we have become familiar with in the first original series.
The young Montalbano is interpreted by actor Michele Riondino who received great reviews after the first episode was broadcast last Thursday.
