“As you know, we don’t have a government, we don’t have a Pope, very soon we will not have a Presidente della Repubblica, it’s very hard in parliament, but at least we have FAI!” these are Former FAI President Ilaria Borletti Buitoni’s first words at the Launching of FAI UK at the Italian Embassy in London.
And looking at the achievements of the organisation, we can certainly agree that since its foundation in 1975, FAI (Fondo per l’Ambiente Italiano), has played an incredible role in preserving and maintaining Italy’s national heritage and cultural assets.
Let’s look at the numbers: 47 properties restored and managed by FAI , 3.500 sqm of frescos restored, 26.000 antique books and 16.000 chattels catalogued and protected, more than 1 million students made aware of the importance of protecting Italy’s artistic legacy and natural heritage, more than 90.000 members and active donors.
In response to the high interest shown by the United Kingdom for Italian heritage, dating back to the times of the Grand Tours, the organization has now created FAI UK. Besides, FAI has been modelled on the English National Trust, as Vice President Magnifico pointed out “We copy you and it works!”, so this has been viewed by the organisation as a sort of homecoming.
The aim of the UK division is to spread awareness and foster appreciation of Italy’s considerable national heritage and to contribute to FAI’s work through special events, conferences, trips and concerts for lovers of Italy living in the United Kingdom.
Together with two other important international support groups, Friends of FAI in America, and FAI SWISS, FAI UK will be co-ordinated by the FAI International central office.
