For the next ten days, an African heat wave is expected to bring record high temperatures to Italy. Experts predict that the mercury will rise well above 35°C (95°F) in the most affected areas.
Today conditions will reach Level 2, a national meteorological designation for weather that presents health risks, in four cities: Bolzano, Frosinone, Latina and Rome. Level 1 alerts will hit 18 other cities.
Temperatures today will reach 35ºC (95º) in central and southern Italy and 34ºC (93º) in Emilia-Romagna, where 15.000 earthquake victims are living in tents without adequate access to fans or air conditioning.
The peak of the heat wave is forecasted to hit the country on Thursday, bringing temperatures of 40ºC (104ºF) to Puglia, Sicilia, and Abruzzo, and 36ºC (97ºF) to Emilia-Romagna.
The above average temperatures will be accompanied by high humidity as well, making it the perfect time to escape the city and head for Italy’s top 10 beaches or most beautiful parks.
