George Clooney and Ryan Gosling on set
Organizers have chosen George Clooney’s Ides of March to open the 68th Venice Film Festival. Clooney directed the political thriller and also stars in the movie alongside Ryan Gosling.
22 films will compete for the Golden Lion award at the world’s oldest film festival, which runs from 31 August to 10 September this year.
Roman Polanski's Carnage starring Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz and John C. Reilly is expected to be a highlight of the 2011 festival. Critics are also anticipating Tomas Alfredson's adaptation of John Le Carre's Cold War thriller Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.
Films from Madonna, Al Pacino and Steven Soderbergh are among the additional projects set to be screened at the Venice Film Festival but will be excluded from competition.
