The spectacular Camera degli Sposi in the Ducal Palace of Mantua is temporarily reopening for the summer.
The museum route that leads to the “bridal chamber” has been closed since the 2012 earthquake that hit the area. It will reopen July 19-October 5. After that date, it will be closed again to allow completion of the restoration. Once it is completed (no date has been specified), the Camera degli Sposi, one of Mantua's leading attractions, will again be permanently open.
The Camera degli Sposi was frescoed with illusionistic paintings by Andrea Mantegna between 1465 and 1474. It was commissioned by Ludovico III Gonzaga, ruler of Mantua from 1444 to 1478. This masterpiece is famous for the use of trompe l'oeil details and its di sotto in sù ceiling, a tradition used in late Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo art. Mantegna’s is one of the earliest di sotto in sù ceiling paintings.
