Once you have an address in Italy, you can apply for a Permesso di Soggiorno for elective residence, but you will still need your Schengen visa. Elective residence says that you would like to live there but not work. So any work would have to be done 'in' your home country.

Thank you so much for the advise.does this mean I can simply apply to live there as long as we work in the US and Not Italy? What is the Reason/ condition of this being approved?Thank you
