We have started the process of buying a 2 bedroom apartment

Without knowing when the apartment was built, it isnt easy to offer advice.   If the finger plates on switches are aluminium, then the electrical system is prior to 1973 and will probably need upgrading,  appliances are now much more power hungry than they were 50 years ago, and 1 or 1.5mm cable is not to going to be enough.    The owner should either provide certification for the electric and water systems or declare that they were legal when they were put in.    If its the latter then assume they will need work.
