Planning Permission for New Wall

As far as I know, when building a wall around your property you are able to create a fixed structure up to a certain height but anything above this needs to be removable i.e. chain link fence. I'm told this is the reason garden walls all over the country have tiny walls topped with fencing. Does anyone know what the max height allowed for the fixed structure is? I have heard it is 1 metre.

I'm not sure if height varies from region to region but in our comune it is indeed 1metre for new builds. Think, however, that where there is an existing higher wall in a poor state of repair it is possible to rebuild to the original height.
