Location
Bonifati is both a seaside resort and a medieval hill town. The seaside town has developed over the current times and boasts long sandy beaches, occasionally interrupted by small rocky headlands that add charm while offering protection from the waves, with some small breakwaters along the coast that create tidal pools. The coast is also dotted with many stone watchtowers, built during the seventeenth century to prevent the Saracen invasions.
In contrast the historical centre of Bonifati, is mainly hilly and mountainous; its village is protected and located within the ruins of an ancient castle, nestled between two hills both with a large cross on top. The summer calendar is also filled with concerts and food festivals which take place at the seaside town and inland hamlets. Notable places of historical, artistic and cultural interest which are worth a visit are Palazzo De Aloe (today known as Palazzo del Capo), Torre di Parise and Torre di Fella. Cittadella boasts two churches: the Parish Church of the Santissima Annunziata and San Francesco di Paola and the Church of San Michele Arcangelo.
Approx. 5km along the main SS18 is a supermarket in the town of Cetraro which also hosts a weekly market, offers a variety of shops, and has a marina for boats. Bonifati has amenities with shops, restaurants, café bars etc.
Close by are other interesting villages for eg. Guardia Piemontese where you can find the Terme Luigiane where you can relax in the thermal waters. Diamante has a lovely promenade and many of the buildings have interesting murals on the walls and it hosts a Pepperoncino Festival every September. Belvedere Marittimo is also well serviced with a variety of shops, supermarkets, a small shopping centre, café bars, restaurants and a long stretch of beach and promenade.
