I hope to go to Verona for the Opera in 2011: can anyone who has already been there offer any advice or tips, on what to do and most importantly, what not to do. Grazie
I have a full, blemish-free Irish driving licence and I used to drive my family from Dublin to Livorno (and back!) on holidays every year. I was PR manager with Fiat Ireland and used to bring journalists to Italy to drive new Fiat / Alfa Romeo / Lanc cars there and I even organised the 'Hannibal Run' for Irish journalists, where 14 of us drove 7 new ALfas all the way from Napoli to Dublin over a week, including a week-end stop in Geneva. Anche, parlo un po' d'Italiana...and I have even been to Umbria a few times! If this sounds of interest, let me know,,,,and we can discuss directly.
To really see the most beautiful coastline in the world...let someone else do the driving! From Sorento all the way to Salerno, you can take a bus or take the Metro del Mare or better still, a combination of both. The Circumvesuviana train is a most interesting way to get to Sorento from Naples and probably gives the best views. From there on around the coast you would be crazy to drive as frequent walls obscure the view from occupants of cars, and drivers dare not take their eyes off the road. If you are seated up high in a bus you can see everything and it's a slow journey so you can take it all in. Metro del Mare is an alternative and equally beautiful way to see the coastline. I've done this coastline a few times and really do advise that you don't use a car.
Hi Browndog, (I have one of them!)Welcome to the community, on a day like today here in Dublin ( it's 31 July, we have rain, and its cold) , all I can think of is being in Puglia next month...I'll stay in touch with this post and do a little research of my own with some colleagues in Italy about the problems (and there are some) of foreigners buying cars there. I assume that you don't want to buy here and drive there (i've done that a few times for holidays) and I'm not sure how long you can keep a car there before registering it OR selling it. I'll let you know what I find...JG
