  Thanks for your responses Postmac and Badger. I don’t live in the UK so that could be a problem.  Can anyone recommend any Italian insurance companies?  

I use a UK company Intasure but that's for holiday use. I picked them becuase they include earthquake cover. They do contents too. Never had to claim off them (DG) so don't know what they're like from that point of view.

They now do cover for permanent residence. Just had a quote from them to cover everything, contents and house inclusive of earthquakes at under £450.00. Only thing not covered is subsidence, landslip and heave.  

 we do the car and the house contents with Direct Line (Italian version) and get a decent discount for combining our 2 policies.
