self-certification works

self-certification works fine. You don't need a piece of paper from the comune. Self-certification does however have to be backed up by reality. With utilities, to get residence discounts you have to be registered at the property in the anagrafe. So make sure this is so before you make the self-certification.

I have recently moved to Italy and tried to contact ENEL. When I phoned there was no one helpful to speak to in English or pigeon Italian, so I sent them an email and they didn't bother to reply! In the end I asked one of my Italian friends to call them. All we had to do was fax them a letter, in Italian, along with photocopies to prove we lived here, i.e. identity card, residence certificate, etc. It is quite easy so long as you can get someone to write the letter in Italian! Hope this helps.

ENEL and language options
Submitted by Andrew on Sun, 07/12/2009 - 04:14Tongue in cheek;I think it's a good job that you are not a native Japanese speaker arriving to live in Italy and trying to contact ENEL by phone hoping they have someone who speaks Japanese. How dare they! When in Rome....

Ringing ENEL

When ringing ENEL or any of the utility companies, I always ask if they can speak slowly as I'm English and 9 times out of 10 they are helpful and speak fairly slowly. Slowly at least for the first 3 words!SOme friends always ask to speak to someone who speaks English and they put the phone down! Which to be fair, in some ways I don't actually blame them.
