A national business publication survey has found Bologna to be Italy’s most livable city.

The 22nd annual survey by Il Sole 24 Ore compared the ‘livability’ of 107 Italian provinces. Research found that Bologna boasted the highest quality of life. Milan was 19th on the list, with Rome coming in at 23rd.

The survey rated areas based on six majors dimensions: standard of living, employment and business affairs, environment and health services, population, public services and leisure time.

“I believe that this region and urban network has all the conditions for overcoming this crisis”, said Bologna’s Mayor Virginio Merola.

The city came out on top thanks to a high score in educational opportunities and daycare options for young children. Bologna was 7th when ranked by standard of living, and 5th in terms of the free time indicators.

In other parts of Italy, Trieste was found to have the best public services while Oristano was found to be the most 'safe' based on low levels of petty crime.
