I am a Sicilian Canadian teaching English in a public school in the province of Ragusa. I am also a published Romance writer, and my collection of stories, Sicilian Lovers, pretty much derives from my personal observations when I moved to Sicily from metropolitan Toronto. Nothing was the same as back home, but while I had a tough time adapting to the small-town mentality, the narrow streets and the ever-present cousins, distant or actually related to us, I’ve grown to accept these as an integral part of my Sicilian origins.
Over the years I discovered that particularly Family, Food and Passion are what sustain us here. From our friendliness and openness we can shift to being short-tempered and super-passionate when something feels unfair or simply wrong. We are not a people that take it in stride. What we lack in diplomacy we make up for in our celestial food and drink.
And of course Sicilians love like no one else. That, pretty much, is what inspired Sicilian Lovers, “Four tales of a dynasty’s passion, hotter than the Sicilian sun, and with a thirst for revenge that not even the entire Mediterranean Sea can quench.”
