Italian prosecutors on Friday filed charges against ten Parma policemen accused of beating up a Ghanaian student they mistook for a drug pusher.

Last September's incident in this northern Italian city made headlines after a photo of 22-year-old Emmanuel Bonsu Foster emerged.

Eight officers, a chief inspector and a commissioner in the Parma city police face possible trial.

A judge must now set a date for a preliminary hearing.

The charges range from grievous bodily harm to making false statements in an attempted cover-up.
