Italy’s Spiaggia dei Conigli (Rabbit Beach) on Lampedusa, Sicily has been crowned the number one beach in the world by TripAdvisor.
The world’s largest travel site website announced the winners of its 2013 Travellers’ Choice Beaches Awards, which are based on feedback from millions of TripAdvisor travellers. Lampedusa’s Spiaggia dei Conigli beat Grace Bay in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos to second place, ahead of popular beaches in the Caribbean and Australia.
Situated on the small island of Lampedusa, the Spiaggia dei Conigli is an unspoiled nature reserve that is only accessible by boat and one of few places in the Mediterranean where loggerhead sea turtles go to lay their eggs. TripAdvisor said the best time to visit the beach is from May to September, and praised it for: “Caribbean colours, white beach, unique setting. The crystal clear sea makes it difficult to leave.”
Italy featured in TripAdvisor’s European-specific best beach ratings. La Pelosa beach at Stintino, Sardinia ranked eighth, Cala Mariolu at Baunei, Sardinia came 17th and the Baia del Silenzio at Sestri Levante, Genoa was ranked 25th.
Sardinia had five and Sicily two of the best beaches in TripAdvisor’s choice of the top beaches in Italy.
