The latest ‘ViniBuoni d’Italia’ guide has given its top award, the Corona (Crown), to 275 wine labels that its experts declare the best wines of the year.
The latest edition of Italy’s only guide dedicated to wine, ‘ViniBuoni d’Italia 2013’ also awarded 294 wines second prizes of a Golden Star and 221 wines gained recognition as not to be missed.
Inspired by the Italian winemaking tradition and aimed at valuing Italian wine production, the ‘ViniBuoni d’Italia’ guide is in its 10th year. It caters to wine lovers in Italy and abroad, who appreciate quality and are looking for wines that compete in both price and performance. Mario Busso and Luigi Cremona edited the 2013 edition.
‘ViniBuoni d’Italia 2013’ contains reviews of 4,278 wines. It has a section dedicated to Italian spumante sparkling wines produced using the classic method edited by the Organizzazione Nazionale Assaggiatori Vino (National Wine Tasters Organisation). This year’s guide does not just focus on Italian wine producers but includes labels from Croatia and Slovenia in recognition of the work being done by winemakers in the two neighbouring countries.
Winners received their awards at a ceremony in Buttrio in Udine, Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The final selections were the result of the labours of 25 regional tasting commissions that were guided by expert sommeliers and journalists who cover the wine sector; together they tasted 25,000 wines over a year.
Among vineyards to receive the coveted Crown are Cos in Sicily for its Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG Classico 2009, La Crotta di Vegneron in the Valle d’Aosta for its Valle d’Aosta DOC Fumin Esprit Follet 2010, and Alessandria Fratelli in Piemonte for its Barolo DOCG San Lorenzo 2008.
