Five Churches with a (Spectacular) View in the Dolomites
The tiny Church of San Giovanni in Ranui in South Tyrol’s Val di Funes is the symbol of the valley and the most photographed church in the region. The peaks of the Odle Dolomites frame it.
On top of a hill in Colle Santa Lucia is the ancient church dedicated to Saint Lucy, with a breathtaking view over the Pelmo and Civetta mountains of the Veneto Dolomites.
The parish church in San Martino di Castrozza, a popular mountain resort, is set against the backdrop of the famous Pale di San Martino, the largest group of the Dolomites, located between eastern Trentino and the Belluno province in Veneto.
Set among green meadows, along the road for the Alpe di Siusi, the largest high-altitude Alpine meadow in Europe, St. Valentin Church boasts frescoes from the 14th and 15th centuries and views over the imposing Sciliar.
St Jacob’s Church in Ortisei is one of the oldest churches in the popular Val Gardena of South Tyrol and can only be reached on foot. It overlooks the Dolomites’ Sassolungo mountain.
They are scattered everywhere around the area, even in the most remote places - and that’s often what makes them even more charming: the churches and chapels, in many cases tiny, whose pointed bell towers or onion domes suddenly appear on a trail or a pasture, on a hill or in the midst of a meadow, always against the magnificent backdrop of the Dolomite mountains.
