The time has come to start planning Italian seaside holidays, and one destination that should be on the list is Liguria. The well-respected Blue Flag environmental program has declared that the region has Italy’s cleanest beaches.
Liguria, whose beaches stretch from the French border to Tuscany, has long been renowned for gorgeous coastline. The northern region is home to Cinque Terre.
The Blue Flag classification is based on analysis of water quality, environmental education and safety, among other factors. The program is meant to recognize a commitment to sustainable development of beaches all over the world.
The Blue Flag initiative has analyzed over 3,000 beaches in 41 countries. In Italy, Liguria scored highest with 16 blue flag beaches. Abruzzo was praised for having 14, while Lazio ranked for merely 4 beaches.
While Sardinia and Sicily scored five and six Blue Flags respectively, the island beaches were better represented on TripAdvisor’s Top 10 List of Italian Beaches.
