Ten Seaside Villages Perfect for a Winter Break

The fishing village and tourist resort of Camogli, on the west side of the peninsula of Portofino, is especially famous for the colorful houses facing the Golfo Paradiso – and for cheese focaccia.

An important tourist and spa center, Grado was a major Roman harbor servicing the nearby powerful town of Aquileia. Divided into picturesque rioni, it boasts beautiful views of the lagoon and a number of architectural treasures.

The site of the sea monster Scylla of Greek mythology, Scilla lies in front of the strait of Messina and is dominated by the Ruffo Castel, a fortress overlooking the beach.

Part of the Gargano National Park, Peschici sits on a spur facing the sea at more than 100 meters high. Take a stroll on one of its beaches that run north and south of the town.

Once an important harbor, Castiglione della Pescaia, lively and crowded in the summer, quiet in winter, offers one of the best views of the Tuscan archipelago from its upper part.

Perched on a rocky spur, Sperlonga was a favorite seaside destination since the times of the Romans. With a typical medieval layout, it features alleys, staircases, ascents and descents with ever charming views over the sea.

Want to experience the Amalfi Coast without the crowds? Head to Sorrento in winter and enjoy its gorgeous views, marvelous colors, luxuriant vegetation, picturesque alleys... and some limoncello.

Abruzzo’s Ortona is home to many popular beaches, as well as a number of historic buildings, churches, fountains and a large Aragonese castle.

One of the richest art cities in Puglia, Gallipoli is the seaside jewel of Salento, with important examples of Baroque art and architecture in its historic center. Do take the panoramic passeggiata known as la Riviera.

Its beach always makes the list of Italy’s most beautiful beaches; San Vito Lo Capo, part of the Zingaro Natural Reserve in Sicily, is a picturesque village of white houses, once the haunt of fishermen working in the tuna fishing industry.
Beach loungers and umbrellas gone, along with loud crowds: what better time than winter to visit historic seaside villages where the charm is all to yourself? Far from depressing, we think that il mare d’inverno has a quiet fascination that may be hard to grasp in the height of the summer season. A mix of history, architectural treasures, beautiful sea views and great food make the following borghi a great winter destination, perfect to recharge over the course of a weekend.
