I used Goldcar at Pisa last week, and found it fine. Admittedly I had seen the reports on forums and was expecting the worst. However, I booked through Argos and read the contract so knew I would be paying up front for a full tank. There was no queue - other than Pisa airports system of taking you in a bus for 400m, which frankly is easier to walk.   I explained that I wouldnt be using the car much - and was upgraded to a car with a smaller fuel tank - the cost of which was exactly the same as filling it myself at the local AGIP. If I had taken the car for only 3 days its a pick up full return full policy, More than 3 days its pick up full return empty.   I paid 70 euros for 4 days hire, plus 120 for petrol - it worked out 50 euros per day hire including petrol - which to me is better than average.   It seems that people book via brokers and then get angry when the contract arrives - this is the brokers fault for not telling clients on the fuel policy, not the car rental company. Its like Ryanair - read the small print - accept it or not - but there's no point going apes/(it when you cant get exactly what you want.

You will probably have rules pertaining to your comune.  You could ask your commercialista or at the APIT which are the rules for holiday lets.  Fiscally, you declare it but can make deductions.  It depends how you rent, B/B, casa vacanza or affittacamera

You all need codici fiscali - go to the local Agenzia dell'Entrate with passports and photocopies, fill in the green form and get your cf's.  You must have one if you have already bought a house.  If you are here for more than 3 months, you should have residency, and if you are here for more than 183 days a year, it is also techincally required fiscally.

A tourist contract is technically a contratto transitorio and is valid up to 18 months.  You cant have residence in the same comune when you sign the contract, but there is nothing to stop you from transferring your residence after tha date.  If you renew the contract there is no problem.  Property should be furnished for a transitorio contract.  Before the recent law changes, the landlord didnt want you to take residence as the taxman would discover he was renting in nero.  Now with the contacts being registered, landlords arent so choosy.

All governments in italy are unelected! Since the porcellum, you cant even vote for your mp.  And then whatever happens in italy is always giverned by the vatican, so it will be interesting to see if M5S free us from that particular yoke.

The pds no longer exists for europeans.  If you stay for more than 3 months you have to get residency, even though it will be elective and not fiscal.  If you are here for more than 6 months there is a school of thought that you should have fiscal residence too.

The Italian driving test is in Italian and there is a theory test in Italian. AFAIK if you're non eu, you must convert to an Italian licence, but am happyissimo to be proved wrong.
