The Ultimate Guide to Emilia-Romagna Food & Wine
words by Silvia Donati
The region of Emilia-Romagna in north-central Italy is famous for its food traditions: pasta dishes such as tortellini, lasagne and tagliatelle, cold cuts like Parma ham, mortadella and culatello, Parmesan cheese, Sangiovese and Pignoletto wines, all hail from here. No wonder Forbes magazine has recently described Emilia-Romagna as “Italy’s Gastronomic Treasure.”
To help you plan your gastronomic pilgrimage to Emilia-Romagna (we promise you it’s worth it!), find below some recommendations on where to go to best experience the region’s food and wine.
We start with a tour of historic shops in the center of Bologna where you can try all kinds of local delicacies, take you to Modena to try the third best restaurant in the world, pay homage to food at the Musei del Cibo in Parma, and wash all that food down with Lambrusco and other regional wines guarded in the picturesque village of Dozza. And while you wait to go on your trip, try the recipe for one of the locals' favorite foods: piadina romagnola.
Buon appetito!
